What it is
Lavender oil is distilled from the flowering tops of lavender plants, mainly Lavandula angustifolia and the hardier hybrid lavandin. Its smell comes largely from linalool and linalyl acetate, two materials that also turn up across florals and herbs.
Lavender is the defining note of the fougère family, the “fern” accord of lavender, coumarin (hay-like, tonka-sweet) and oakmoss-type notes that shaped barbershop and a huge share of men’s fragrance.
