Amber

Warm, resinous, glowing. “Amber” in perfume isn’t the gemstone; it is a cosy accord built to feel like late light on skin.

5 picks across 2shelvesFamily: Amber (formerly “oriental”)

A synthetic material modeled on ambergris; dry, warm and radiant, sold under trade names such as Ambroxan.

What it is

Fossil amber has almost no smell. The perfume note is an accord, usually built from resins such as labdanum and benzoin plus vanilla, giving a warm, sweet, slightly powdery glow. The fragrance family once called “oriental” is now widely referred to as amber.

Ambroxide (ambroxan) is a different story: a synthetic material originally modeled on ambergris. It smells dry, woody-warm and mineral, and it gives many modern colognes their long-lasting radiance.

How it wears

Ambers are base-heavy, so they last and they project. Classic resinous ambers are rich and enveloping; ambroxan-led scents feel cleaner and airier.

Ambroxan is another note that noses perceive very differently. Some people find it powerful, others can barely pick it up.

Bench tips

  • Resinous ambers are evening and cold-weather wears. Start with one spray.
  • Ambroxan-heavy scents read fresher and are easier for daytime.
  • Amber is a strong layering base under florals or vanilla.
