Florals

The biggest family in perfume, and far broader than “smells like flowers”. Fresh-cut, powdery, creamy or heady: there is a floral for every mood.

13 picks across 3shelvesFamily: Floral

A rosy-smelling material found in rose and many other flowers; a workhorse of floral perfumery.

What it is

Floral notes come from flower absolutes and oils (rose, jasmine, tuberose), from synthetic materials that recreate flowers that can’t easily be extracted (peony, freesia, lily of the valley), and from blends of both.

Iris is a special case: the prized material, orris, comes from the plant’s rhizome rather than the flower, and is dried and aged for years before processing. It smells powdery and soft, a little like cosmetics or cool earth.

How it wears

Mostly heart notes: they emerge after the opening and define the middle hours of a fragrance.

Range is huge. Rose and peony read fresh and bright; jasmine and tuberose are rich and heady with a lot of presence; iris is quiet and powdery.

Bench tips

  • If “floral” has meant old-fashioned to you, try a floral paired with musk or vanilla: modern and soft.
  • Heady white florals (tuberose, jasmine) project. Go light in close quarters.
  • Floral body mists are an inexpensive way to work out which flowers you actually like.

A note on the pheromone bottles

Some picks below are sold as pheromone fragrances. No human pheromone has been conclusively identified and the evidence for synthetic “pheromone” ingredients is mixed. They are here because of how they smell. What the evidence says.

Questions

What is a white floral?

A group of rich, heady flowers such as jasmine, tuberose, gardenia and orange blossom. They are full-bodied and tend to project more than rose or peony.

What does iris smell like in perfume?

Powdery, soft, slightly earthy and cool, sometimes compared to lipstick or makeup. It comes mostly from the root (orris), not the flower.

Are floral fragrances only for women?

No. Florals are common in men’s and unisex fragrance too, often paired with woods or spice. Wear what you enjoy.
